<br />
This weekend I was so lucky to have a whole day to spend with two of my favorite creative ladies, Alisa and Staci. We spent 12 HOURS beading on Friday. When all was said and done, we'd created 36 pieces of jewelry. The above are all of the pieces I got to take home! I made all of them except the long coral and green necklace on the right and the ring on the bottom left. Staci made the long necklace and the ring is actually from our shopping excursion on Saturday to the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/TheFunkyZebras" target="_blank">Funky Zebra</a>, but it fit the collection so nicely, I couldn't resist putting it in the picture too!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I just returned from a work trip to Alexandria, VA. I had some free time that I spent shopping on King Street in Old Town. I picked up three very pretty strings of beads at the <a href="http://www.potomacbeads.com/index.html" target="_blank">Potomac Bead Company</a>. The larger coral beads above were one of my finds. Coral and mint ended up being my theme of the day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJPVNz4STEUEH1f7zPtbmrmoJQx4DPgs4Uhug1FYrmvpajAZ2EmGNVDbU54Y2T-lWItHViTXeBMGSBrXAPA8_KFyba_5OYqLzWkbiNlJzuzbFfMm08KXciy7hvu_BxbvNRveRg_vBd-8uS/s1600/Color-block-necklaces-for-spring.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="345" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJPVNz4STEUEH1f7zPtbmrmoJQx4DPgs4Uhug1FYrmvpajAZ2EmGNVDbU54Y2T-lWItHViTXeBMGSBrXAPA8_KFyba_5OYqLzWkbiNlJzuzbFfMm08KXciy7hvu_BxbvNRveRg_vBd-8uS/s400/Color-block-necklaces-for-spring.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The other theme of the day was color blocking. I have been seeing these styles around and pinned a few inspirations. I saw quite a bit of color blocked jewelry out in DC and knew that I wanted to try my hand at it. I absolutely love all of these necklaces - and chose my outfits the last two days just to wear them! The mint teardrop faceted jade and the coral rose quartz (both on the 3rd necklace) were also from my trip to Alexandria.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2n7HxulASyDy29758IKaGhU9aX6Tc7Z0z5fa2JM3cVlHMhx0i1gcklNT5yVtYtzz4u7hZrsgIAE1Gh3Rk8Sv3kpopq6XqGXc9Aw5QGBDDxBeAhm7zxy44KFTm6qGtuDTpnZe8PxwX7BNj/s1600/Spring-earrings-in-yellow,-coral-and-mint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2n7HxulASyDy29758IKaGhU9aX6Tc7Z0z5fa2JM3cVlHMhx0i1gcklNT5yVtYtzz4u7hZrsgIAE1Gh3Rk8Sv3kpopq6XqGXc9Aw5QGBDDxBeAhm7zxy44KFTm6qGtuDTpnZe8PxwX7BNj/s400/Spring-earrings-in-yellow,-coral-and-mint.jpg" width="223" /></a></div>
<br />
I traded Staci for the long necklace in first picture that she made. The two sets of coral earrings on the right went home to Colorado with her!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvEExmxgKj9EgfwrbFk0Q6RAHgGZcgkqGtWOLSB4T6KGIJuPy80x_qcB6-YPNX5SrHTnrBouD-QnVfoeDmgovsX8zAZSqvZrQPsaEdcxrdmFQnky028S46xndcOLLdYCvZaqKr-0T_7wv7/s1600/Faceted-tear-drop-pendants-in-green-and-mint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvEExmxgKj9EgfwrbFk0Q6RAHgGZcgkqGtWOLSB4T6KGIJuPy80x_qcB6-YPNX5SrHTnrBouD-QnVfoeDmgovsX8zAZSqvZrQPsaEdcxrdmFQnky028S46xndcOLLdYCvZaqKr-0T_7wv7/s400/Faceted-tear-drop-pendants-in-green-and-mint.jpg" width="392" /></a></div>
<br />
I have been loving the faceted teardrop shape too so I made a couple of little wire pendants. It's been a long, long time since I attempted wire wrapping and the rose gold wire was very simple to manipulate.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPQeVNNWiCL43cDJnF11X4NRZFOBjmMuZ9Rv682szEDFaOhb3Hidk56HIQMbIzN8JHPDg31NXDVpJuNfRV0G9nsWMRn8Qnc9tQPo2W3BxvLTMINb73RJszZInU2Mg5gNpHc-gmJrEeu5Rq/s1600/Mint-and-yellow-earrings-for-spring.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPQeVNNWiCL43cDJnF11X4NRZFOBjmMuZ9Rv682szEDFaOhb3Hidk56HIQMbIzN8JHPDg31NXDVpJuNfRV0G9nsWMRn8Qnc9tQPo2W3BxvLTMINb73RJszZInU2Mg5gNpHc-gmJrEeu5Rq/s400/Mint-and-yellow-earrings-for-spring.jpg" width="378" /></a></div>
<br />
I couldn't get enough of the jade beads so I made some earrings to go with the pendant and/or color blocked necklace. Since yellow slipped in the pallet of the collection in a couple of the necklaces, I just kept going with it. I adore both of these pairs of earrings.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These little wooden yellow beads caught my eye when I was digging for yellow beads for the earrings. With the ombré blue beads, it somehow reminds me of My Little Ponies...but in a good way. Ha!</div>

<br />
Sorry for the horrible phone pics on these but I wanted to share what Staci and Alisa made too. For some reason, they didn't let me take of theirs home with me to photograph! The above photo is Staci's creations - 4 bracelets, 2 anklets, and 3 long necklaces.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Alisa is the real jeweler of the three of us and it shows! She cranked out so many beautiful pieces. 5 pairs of earrings and 7 necklaces. I'm not even 100 percent that's all she made! If you ever looking for one of a kind, handmade beaded jewelry, you can find her over a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/4SquareStudios" target="_blank">4 Square Studios</a>.<br />
<br />
It was a fantastic day and Alisa is so generous to share her studio, home and stash with us. Thank you, Alisa!Tonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17448568961007657828noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4577067037814413989.post-58190645555603001492013-01-26T13:12:00.001-06:002013-01-26T13:12:59.487-06:00Oh Deer...I kept your quilt for myself!Remember when I made my sister the <a href="http://tonyadusold.blogspot.com/2012/11/when-i-had-idea-for-this-quilt-i.html" target="">Lady Lattice quilt</a> for Christmas? And then decided to keep it for myself because it goes so nicely in my living room?!? That meant I had very little time to crank out another quilt for her before Christmas. I had already finished her twin brother's quilt and couldn't give him his without one for her!<br />
<br />
I bought a jelly roll and charm pack of <a href="http://www.fatquartershop.com/store/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details.asp?sid=7120119122357120&Store_id=499&page_id=23&Item_ID=71243&Parent_Ids=" target="_blank">Oh Deer by MoMo for Moda</a> at the <a href="http://wiquiltexpo.com/" target="_blank">Wisconsin Quilt Expo</a> last year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEied5wCZLsRpsfdrQtUguGK2HzAbgNQDJoI3mqpzkpIy6O9CisQigzBmze-GMAAtm8AtsWQOoXUfR12-PJRAc0I-uFeTa_L4OsQYYdQKg9Jn3s7y5UI-_inxRZV4QcNa1YIdMRscruTdukk/s1600/OhDeer-MoMo-Modajpg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEied5wCZLsRpsfdrQtUguGK2HzAbgNQDJoI3mqpzkpIy6O9CisQigzBmze-GMAAtm8AtsWQOoXUfR12-PJRAc0I-uFeTa_L4OsQYYdQKg9Jn3s7y5UI-_inxRZV4QcNa1YIdMRscruTdukk/s320/OhDeer-MoMo-Modajpg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It was a treat for me to make something for myself because I loved the prints and colors dearly <i>(hehe. pun.)</i> So I decided it would be a fair trade to make her an Oh Deer quilt instead of me since I had stolen her first one for myself!<br />
<br />
This is the first time I had even bought a jelly roll (40 strips of 2.5"x44" of coordinating prints). In the words of my friend Alisa, jelly rolls are "juicy." They are soooo juicy! They feel great in your hands, are so fun to unwrap and a breeze to work with. I can feel a new addiction coming on...<br />
<br />
Anyway, back to the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiZH6K83Akvseuzt_KXE5l5tDnuTC7mxoYrhXgpJs39NQqlSZ3zm53l1qvy69ymvcTi88N7FSZUoZrWAYZp1Fokyby89o3Wb9qvStC6XTzBYY6Fosh5VQ4Rr7nYer-0vKajbtRWk_tpHTM/s1600/oh-deer-quilt-front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiZH6K83Akvseuzt_KXE5l5tDnuTC7mxoYrhXgpJs39NQqlSZ3zm53l1qvy69ymvcTi88N7FSZUoZrWAYZp1Fokyby89o3Wb9qvStC6XTzBYY6Fosh5VQ4Rr7nYer-0vKajbtRWk_tpHTM/s400/oh-deer-quilt-front.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was quick to make and I love how bright, busy and fun it is. I just sewed all but about 6 strips of the jellyroll together in a somewhat random order. Then I cut about 10 inches off one side. I sewed the squares of the charm pack into two rows and pieced that between the two striped pieces. I did the whole top in an afternoon. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the quilting I did a meandering pattern, trying not to have any cross overs. </div>

This quilt was well received by my sister. She called and told me that roommates and guests to her house have all commented on it and she really loves it. That makes me really, really happy and feel a little less guilty that I am sitting under the quilt I made for her first but kept!</div>

I am really happy with how they turned out. I named this pattern Window Panes...for obvious reasons. A year or so ago, my brother mailed me fabric to make him some pillows. Whatever I had for leftovers, he said to just put in my stash. I knew I wanted to make him a quilt with the scraps. A couple of random charm packs and yardage from my stash later, the only fabric I ended up having to buy was the wider sashing between each "window."<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When I had the idea for this quilt, I thought it would be very simple. Cut a bunch of fat quarters into 2, 3 and 4 inch strips. Sew them together in random order. Cut strips and piece together. Ta Da! So easy, right? HA! Not so much. While the first steps of cutting strips, sewing them together and cutting rectangles from the big striped pieces was a breeze, cutting and piecing the rest of the top SUCKED! I learned that triangles and 45 degree angles are not for me.</div>
<br />
Thankfully, the final product turned out beautiful! This is seriously one of my favorite quilts I've ever seen - and I made it! I will, however, never do this patter again!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbWn2knDH4d_6ejtj66B_FYI5PuKWbTcS_0ENfJNfAyGbWee2Pwmx2Db7oyNH4yEWNeuQxoz21CiwE05A5FwsVJHZBJfBe5nZTBXeuqf7joV8PPTNoqGDadT7gAsMye1Z975FuCYNL8cL2/s1600/back+whole.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbWn2knDH4d_6ejtj66B_FYI5PuKWbTcS_0ENfJNfAyGbWee2Pwmx2Db7oyNH4yEWNeuQxoz21CiwE05A5FwsVJHZBJfBe5nZTBXeuqf7joV8PPTNoqGDadT7gAsMye1Z975FuCYNL8cL2/s400/back+whole.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a vintage sheet for the back. When it came time to actually long arm the quilt, I didn't want to add a whole lot tight stitching as the pattern is already fairly busy. So I created a large scale loop-de-loo pattern (yes, I am fairly sure that is the technical term!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDVRhNutY0hsqUAsLuuEmpY9tuHWYCSY3QQc_ly4xiJOHRTQ-fZNgQUO2ep_OkcOpNWfWZZ9-Yz1sx3dJqEK6cQR67XtZdFpuaFs4dTVZ68aM0j4Su95RyqFxDDVzWI0KQkXN6s3Ap0bkK/s1600/back+close.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDVRhNutY0hsqUAsLuuEmpY9tuHWYCSY3QQc_ly4xiJOHRTQ-fZNgQUO2ep_OkcOpNWfWZZ9-Yz1sx3dJqEK6cQR67XtZdFpuaFs4dTVZ68aM0j4Su95RyqFxDDVzWI0KQkXN6s3Ap0bkK/s400/back+close.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see the quilting really well on the back but it blends in fairly well on the front.<br />
<br />

<br />
I am in love with the end result. <strike>I am giving this to my sister for Christmas but it will be extremely hard to part with. I hope she appreciates the time and effort (and frustration!) that went into this gift.</strike> Update: I just couldn't do it. I am keeping this quilt for me! Shhhhhh, don't tell Kelly! I am sitting under it right now!<br />

The solid fabric was another vintage sheet. (Thank you, Alisa!) And as always, a HUGE thank you to Gloria for letting our QA club take over her kitchen and studio for long arming every few Sundays.

It's light sensitive dye that you can use on fabric, natural wood and so much more. My awesome MIL got me 3 colors and I've been having a blast experimenting with them.<br />
<br />
For our first try, my friend Alisa and I decided to dye canvas and go with an art/sewing/crafting theme. I covered large pieces of cardboard with garbage bags and wrapped the fabric around, securing it with tape. Mix the Inkodye with water and brush it on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFxse4YChUCtqYWFusMDZi7fNx3PQVQY4CBjsCxelHjQpFvh9aKcbkwQ3dY9BKbT4KDdw2a9fWJLRhQrC_s352YA6Lx6MCzgs8bYrqLK0QI0sLQrB7R0Ycy-Ia_Fp0urvC7QZy6YHbJzuY/s1600/inkodye+crafting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFxse4YChUCtqYWFusMDZi7fNx3PQVQY4CBjsCxelHjQpFvh9aKcbkwQ3dY9BKbT4KDdw2a9fWJLRhQrC_s352YA6Lx6MCzgs8bYrqLK0QI0sLQrB7R0Ycy-Ia_Fp0urvC7QZy6YHbJzuY/s400/inkodye+crafting.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now comes the fun part! Place cutouts or found objects (the flatter the better) in a pleasing pattern on the fabric and take it outside to sit in the sun. I used buttons and Alisa used art supplies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
While the dye goes on clear, it starts to change color immediately in the sun. In full sun, the dye takes less than 10 minutes. On a cloudy day, a bit longer. We did ours in late afternoon (see how the items are casting shadows?) This is not ideal. Next time I'll do it when the sun is straight overhead. But our first try fabric still turned out really cute and we had a blast!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicihEiUOhHA_2URCwZocSbJIQUV5-bXpiz6c1oKgGmfu4u_XeeU2YK6Qo0E1zjkl4oGJWLMpfLQ9yyzOEGDSjbRwg-dHr_xqnsKb8I2xE6Sg5sfsWb5s0lXs1nJKM4069MHHMBLV40Dvt3/s1600/inkodye+buttons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicihEiUOhHA_2URCwZocSbJIQUV5-bXpiz6c1oKgGmfu4u_XeeU2YK6Qo0E1zjkl4oGJWLMpfLQ9yyzOEGDSjbRwg-dHr_xqnsKb8I2xE6Sg5sfsWb5s0lXs1nJKM4069MHHMBLV40Dvt3/s400/inkodye+buttons.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm calling mine "ghosty buttons." Because of the shadows the low sun cast, the buttons aren't as sharp as they could be but overall I still really like the effect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqVj0os2_cAPYY0_hCwl-UdrPjRoX77Appm_HGSukEihpxGHuZ3UJ8BpyD3-BhLFnNKk4Er2Z5OgZyVc0fesxJZpAZDs8wfm8iOwyG5EfBd5omGxPTl6fs1G7EJ6sbRqZJCW05huDghtPr/s1600/inkodye+art+supplies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="395" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqVj0os2_cAPYY0_hCwl-UdrPjRoX77Appm_HGSukEihpxGHuZ3UJ8BpyD3-BhLFnNKk4Er2Z5OgZyVc0fesxJZpAZDs8wfm8iOwyG5EfBd5omGxPTl6fs1G7EJ6sbRqZJCW05huDghtPr/s400/inkodye+art+supplies.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Alisa's art supply inspired fabric turned out really cool too! Some of the smaller objects didn't work as well, but I love that you can see the markings and text from the clear ruler and triangle she used.<br />
<br />
We haven't made anything out of our fabric yet, but we are thinking of making crafting utility aprons. I am also considering making a cushion for my sewing chair out of the button fabric, but the blue really doesn't go in my studio space. I'd love to hear any other ideas of what we should make - leave suggestions in the comments!Tonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17448568961007657828noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4577067037814413989.post-23708750965271520682012-07-09T08:00:00.000-05:002012-07-23T09:31:59.362-05:00We looked! Then we saw him step in on the mat! We looked! And we saw him! The Cat in the Hat!Have you seen the Dr. Seuss prints from <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/" target="_blank">Robert Kauffman</a>? There is a <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/pre-cut/f0570538/" target="_blank">Cat in the Hat</a> and <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/pre-cut/the_lorax_by_dr_seuss_organic_cotton_earth_colorstory/" target="_blank">Lorax </a>set. My friend asked me to make a quilt for her little Baby B that arrived earlier this month (Baby B turned out to be Miss Hathaway Jane!) She gave me a fat quarter set of both lines (both colorways for the Lorax!). She wanted me to use the Cat in the Hat fabric for her and the Lorax fabric I get to keep. The Lorax is one of my all time favorite books. I haven't quite decided what I'll make with the fabric, but I am leaning towards another quilt - for me!<br />
<br />
This post is supposed to be about the quilt I made her, so I'll stop rambling about the Lorax fabric. (Can you tell I'm excited about it?!?)<br />
<br />
There were a couple of difference challenges with this quilt. First, the fabrics are all adorable but a bit busy. Second, my friend wanted something that could be folded and work for a crib but would also work more long term as Baby B grows into a toddler then "big kid." We decided together that something long and narrow would fit both needs - then I discovered the two big panels in the bundle were long and narrow, so it worked out perfectly.<br />
<br />
I am not a good pattern follower. I like to make things up as I go and see where it takes me. The Cat in that Hat is zany and a bit crazy, so I decided the quilt needed to be too. As I said before, the fabric is busy so I didn't want that to become overwhelming. So I stuck with larger blocks of the fabric, and just turned everything to a 45 degree angle. I am really happy with the results.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgihyphenhyphenQ5RLqhrcmkazoeu3meFAcK8y1jLv0bFa9CC04X75sm9M131eZ1r1fD7IW7R4A87tsVzoVfm5PVGsjGMNYMi5w6OYLF5twOvdetvM22K0oy8qDbhu_JaaZ2zhFbgemkGi1ekC3uxDSr/s1600/DSCN3727.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgihyphenhyphenQ5RLqhrcmkazoeu3meFAcK8y1jLv0bFa9CC04X75sm9M131eZ1r1fD7IW7R4A87tsVzoVfm5PVGsjGMNYMi5w6OYLF5twOvdetvM22K0oy8qDbhu_JaaZ2zhFbgemkGi1ekC3uxDSr/s400/DSCN3727.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
What do you think? Squaring the quilt and appliqueing the center panel on were by far the biggest challenges.<br />
<br />
I also wanted to use both big panels that came in the bundle so I did just a little something on the back.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGLbL3PLd_g1teG7_1JOUjFA6KoeaqWBYAJjkjVW2Sgvqn6OOObJO3Pcm8wnOIc6FWc53eOylPlamyt_mKQyp5iEFHlOiU3Dr0fnOmCtFkjGq15JoliSHJgDDXXch76COmwrKWhkmRuqic/s1600/DSCN3732.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGLbL3PLd_g1teG7_1JOUjFA6KoeaqWBYAJjkjVW2Sgvqn6OOObJO3Pcm8wnOIc6FWc53eOylPlamyt_mKQyp5iEFHlOiU3Dr0fnOmCtFkjGq15JoliSHJgDDXXch76COmwrKWhkmRuqic/s400/DSCN3732.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I basically used every scrap of fabric in the entire fat quarter bundle and it worked out perfectly. I quilted my favorite go to "pattern" of meandering bumble bee. It goes nice with the straight lines of the quilt and its so simple to do, you can't mess it up!<br />

<br />
This past weekend I was feeling inspired to make something for a friend's birthday. I had no real concept of what I wanted to do until I saw an A7 envelope sitting on the filing cabinet in my studio. I thought it would make for a cute clutch/pouch, so I opened it all the way up and used it for a "pattern."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDA9rNNLfYoYdengXzn9AiGkipqU_nPDAVHKvkeJ1XYLLe0Cre8cnJR2WvmMvV_t7WHln7PeTwY-LzZuridYD2z4ULvDgQpB-jVOHUo6LtXaIiMlK_b-wsXZ2fMJWrETml9BPh4u7p5Xkj/s1600/DSCN3698.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDA9rNNLfYoYdengXzn9AiGkipqU_nPDAVHKvkeJ1XYLLe0Cre8cnJR2WvmMvV_t7WHln7PeTwY-LzZuridYD2z4ULvDgQpB-jVOHUo6LtXaIiMlK_b-wsXZ2fMJWrETml9BPh4u7p5Xkj/s400/DSCN3698.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The birthday girl is a big fan of coral and leopard/cheetah prints. Both of these fabrics were in my stash. There is one layer of quilting batting that I fused to the lining with heat n bond. Fusible batting would have been one less step, but I didn't have any on hand.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIwQzTu2hWvOc0j7r34-p-L4nmG-n05CXpq8Lq65ISjTKBcKqH4g5EYryuq-UKbe-7g89eTb8W0paRjLA7jAlSFfMIpxvTMKnOI6GlZGgqq0pWXue3KcGnY7QELKzNjiYA7MwrlxnsBlvx/s1600/DSCN3700.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIwQzTu2hWvOc0j7r34-p-L4nmG-n05CXpq8Lq65ISjTKBcKqH4g5EYryuq-UKbe-7g89eTb8W0paRjLA7jAlSFfMIpxvTMKnOI6GlZGgqq0pWXue3KcGnY7QELKzNjiYA7MwrlxnsBlvx/s400/DSCN3700.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;"> </span><span style="background-color: white;">I had about 20 minutes before I needed to give the gift, so of course, I decided it was necessary to make another item to go with it. </span>I decided a little zipper pouch that fits perfectly inside would be nice so small things like change wouldn't escape if it was carried alone as a clutch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0CUfj-MaTDhJx4dTFQevJmXuQMgAvcyxUCsk4JBWtMC9_QV7fL5wwKMhsXDugXmhjhZuEDk5vEkgLWX1GyiSpswuohprehyphenhyphenQE6pgnCCHDFagO2FS8ssk0srM_03dlwtNkDKzTxgWlhlfW/s1600/DSCN3701.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0CUfj-MaTDhJx4dTFQevJmXuQMgAvcyxUCsk4JBWtMC9_QV7fL5wwKMhsXDugXmhjhZuEDk5vEkgLWX1GyiSpswuohprehyphenhyphenQE6pgnCCHDFagO2FS8ssk0srM_03dlwtNkDKzTxgWlhlfW/s400/DSCN3701.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm really happy with how it turned out. The different textures of the fabrics work well together and I love the little vintage coral button for the envelope closure. The gift was well received and I think I'll have to make more of these babies someday soon.Tonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17448568961007657828noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4577067037814413989.post-34937817079827775352012-06-12T14:27:00.002-05:002012-06-14T13:40:14.294-05:0030 Random Acts of Kindness<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<i>Kindness Cards</i></div>
<br />
In honor of our 30th birthdays, my friend Michelle and I decided to do a day filled with random (for the recipients) acts of kindness. We had a blast and I would highly recommend doing something like this. It was fun, emotional, hilarious, rewarding and scary (in a good way!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNYYleXSX5ozHOG3QALsJhBk7Yrkqv-VldrKLmVlcjSEhYMY-PVohfJVZfUf0rFvBCpVgM5wcAaPxihlOo3abX9wLaEJLrlh3WGgGTX96bR81wriZpxhibBHMwi3HoEWQuo-9sbqeULs55/s1600/IMG954289.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNYYleXSX5ozHOG3QALsJhBk7Yrkqv-VldrKLmVlcjSEhYMY-PVohfJVZfUf0rFvBCpVgM5wcAaPxihlOo3abX9wLaEJLrlh3WGgGTX96bR81wriZpxhibBHMwi3HoEWQuo-9sbqeULs55/s400/IMG954289.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Care packages for the animal shelter volunteers, librarians, fire department and police department. (After the police wouldn't accept it - we repurposed theirs for nurses!)</i></div>
<br />
Here's what we did (all in about 6 hours!):<br />
1. Took a care package to the local librarians.<br />
2. Left money and a Kindness Card with the librarian to pay someone's fine.<br />
3. Took a snacks care package to the local fire station.<br />
4. Took a snacks care package to the nurse's station at pediatric hospital.<br />
5. Paid for a random person's coffee.<br />
6. Left money and a Kindness Card with a pharmacist to help pay for someone's prescription.<br />
7. Fed quarters to expired parking meters.<br />
8. Paid for someone's shake at the local ice cream parlor.<br />
9. Gave a Starbucks gift card to a family in the park.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I did a pet food drive for a week at work and ended up with a whole trunk full of food, treats and toys with no cost to us, which left more $ to spend on other items!</i></div>
<br />
10. Took about 150 lbs. of stuff to the animal shelter including food, treats and toys.<br />
10a. Took a snacks care package to the volunteers and workers at the animal shelter.<br />
11. Left money and a Kindness Card in the pay phones at the hospital.<br />
12. Gave three bouquets of flowers to nurses in the hospital to give to patients.<br />
13. Left money and a Kindness Card in the beverages vending machines at the hospital.<br />
<div>
14. Took crayons, cards and coloring books to the pediatric unit at the hospital. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Special thank you to Lindsay, Alisa and Gloria for helping make the rosettes and headbands!</i></div>
<br />
15. Made and gave a dozen baby rosette headbands to the maternity ward. </div>
<div>
16. Donated a couple dozen adult and children's books to the patient library. </div>
<div>
17. Gave money and a Kindness Card to the parking attendant in one of the hospital parking garages to pay for the next patient's parking. </div>
<div>
18. Put quarters in all the gum ball and candy dispensers at the mall. </div>
<div>
19. Gave a big bag of suckers to the children's museum to pass out to visiting kids. </div>
<div>
20. Bought movie tickets for a senior couple. </div>
<div>
21. Paid for a girls lunch at a fast food restaurant. </div>
<div>
22. Gave a Target gift card to a family in Target. </div>
<div>
23. Gave a Target gift card to a young pregnant girl in Target. </div>
<div>
24. Gave a Starbucks gift card to a guy in the Starbucks parking lot. </div>
<div>
25. Bought helium balloons and gave them to kids in the grocery store. </div>
<div>
26. Gave a woman in the grocery store parking lot a gift card to the store.</div>
<div>
27. Gave a gas gif card to a woman in the gas station. </div>
<div>
28. Put a baggy of quarters with a Kindness Card in someone's laundry at the laundromat. </div>
<div>
29. Gave an elderly woman a grocery gift card in the grocery store. </div>
<div>
30. Paid for someone's snow cone. </div>
<div>
<br />
So now you're wondering, "Which ones were fun, emotional, hilarious, rewarding and scary?" Here are the stories and memories:<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#7. Fed quarters to expired parking meters.</i> Did you know that feeding other people's meters is illegal some places? We saw a meter maid writing tickets so we snuck down the block ahead of him, plugging expired meters. If you know either of us, stealth is not a strong point! I felt like we were doing something very naughty, which is always fun!<br />
<div>
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#8. Paid for someone's shake at the local ice cream parlor. </i>It was a weird time of day, and no one was at the ice cream parlor so we had to wait around for a customer. The first person was a super nerdy, mildly creepy looking dude, so of course, I made Michelle pay! He was exceptionally confused and flustered. I am pretty sure this is what he was thinking, "Dear God! A GIRL! And she's talking to me! What do I do?!? What do I do?!?" It was hilarious.<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#10a. Took a snacks care package to the volunteers and workers at the animal shelter.</i> They were very excited and thankful that we also brought treats for the people. It seems people generously donate to the animals, never considering all the volunteer hours it takes to run a shelter! I'm glad we thought of this!</div>
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#14. Took crayons, cards and coloring books to the pediatric unit at the hospital.</i> This girl was the only person who really, really wanted to know who we were. We told her simply "Tonya and Michelle" but wouldn't give her more. We weren't doing this for thanks or recognition, just for the joy of it.<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#15. Made and gave a dozen baby rosette headbands to the maternity ward.</i> The woman at the reception desk seemed very confused. We left the bag and a stack of Kindness Cards with her. After we walked away, she opened it up and got very excited. She caught us as we got in the elevator for a very enthusiastic thank you and told us how cute she thought they were. Again, super special thank you to my QA (Quilters Anonymous) girls, Lindsay, Alisa and Gloria for helping get these all done in one afternoon. You did a wonderful job and they were all beautiful!<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#18. Put quarters in all the gum ball and candy dispensers at the mall.</i> After we'd done this, we wandered the mall doing other acts of kindness. A while later we saw a little boy with two giant handfuls of candy, grinning ear to ear. At first I was a bit annoyed he used as many quarters as his hands could hold the candy. But then I decided, to a kid, that was like hitting it big on a slot machine and his elation was contagious!<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#20. Bought movie tickets for a senior couple.</i> Unexpectedly, this became a favorite act for both of us. After we paid, the woman pulled us aside and asked a bunch of questions about what we were doing and why. Then she told us that she and a friend started the "Pay It Forward" curriculum for the state of New Jersey schools. She took two Kindness Cards so she could pay it forward for each movie ticket. Our conversation ended with hugs and the knowledge that at least one of our acts of kindness would definitely be paid forward. It was awesome!<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#24. Gave a Starbucks gift card to a guy in the Starbucks parking lot. </i>After waiting for a while in the parking lot (everyone goes through the drive thru and not into the store!) we were beginning to look suspicious and act silly. The poor guy we gave this too ran a gauntlet of emotions as we approached and gave him the gift card - every single emotion clearly displayed on his face. It was funny.<br />
<div>
</div>
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#25. Bought helium balloons and gave them to kids in the grocery store. </i>Besides the police who could not accept our care package (as it constituted bribery - OOPS!) one little boy was the only person to turn down an act of kindness. He was very serious about not wanting a balloon. It worked out because we only had 2 left and gave them both to sisters, who would have had to share otherwise.<br />
<div>
</div>
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#27. Gave a gas gif card to a woman in the gas station. </i>This woman had let us go in front of her in line, then watched us purchase the gift card. When I turned around and gave it to her with a kindness card, she was SHOCKED! It was pretty funny and an over the top reaction for a $10 gas card. We could see her animatedly telling others about what we did as we drove away.<br />
<div>
</div>
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#28. Put a baggy of quarters with a Kindness Card in someone's laundry at the laundromat. </i>Let's face it, laundromats are scary, even in Iowa, even in the middle of the day. It was full of some unusual looking men, so after a tiny bit of hesitation, we threw the Kindness Card and quarters into someone's basket as they had their back turned and ran out the door! Were we being over dramatic? Yes. Was it hilarious, fun and exhilarating at the same time? Definitely!<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>#29. Gave an elderly woman a grocery gift card in the grocery store. </i>This woman was super sweet and thankful. We got another hug from her!<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
The final, mildly unrelated story of the day: Before we even got started, I found a roofing nail... in my foot. It wasn't terrible but resulted in me limping all day and a trip to urgent care the next morning for a tetanus shot and to get a small piece of shoe dug out of my heal. Thanks, Karma, for your kindness to me while I do 30 selfless acts.<br />
<br />
Again, this was a wonderful experience and I plan to do it again in the future. Now it's your turn. Grab a good friend and start your random acts of kindness day. I promise you will have a blast! I'd love to hear about it if you do it/have done it. </div>

YAY! December and January were nearly snow-free and unseasonably warm. So of course I waited until February when it's cold and there's 6 inches of snow on the ground to take pictures.<br />
<br />
This quilt was SO simple. Sew a bunch of strips together, cut into squares, twist and sew back together! What? That's not enough for you to make one too? <a href="http://beesquarefabrics.blogspot.com/2009/03/how-to-make-zig-zag-quilt-without.html" target="_blank">Check out Bee Square's tutorial.</a><br />

And you make it right in the bowl so there's less dishes which is always a plus in my book.<br />
<br />
I am going to give amounts that make 2 dinner servings or 4 servings if it's with a meal, but since you are making it right in the serving bowls, you can easily make more or less depending on how many people you're feeding.<br />
<br />
3 cups beef broth<br />
2 T. cooking sherry<br />
1 sm canister French fried onions (like you put on green bean casserole)<br />
1 sm baguette (day old works best)<br />
2-4 cheese slices (I've used swiss, muenster, provolone and mozzarella - use whatever you like)<br />
<br />
Divide broth and sherry equally between oven safe bowls. Split the canister of French onions equally between bowls. Top each with a thick (about 1") slice of bread and a slice of cheese. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. Done! It's delicious and so simple.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdzDRiOKHAL48y1h6R30MysYhlhsgQbG-2-EUEZyrrlYBvNqsQTSpwv963vzsHYWctd3XPfAOHHBwHx1aj-ipFqxusFA0xMvjwTwXcGT74i_f2c5E8cAZGnd1L_pW4AR8zL76_Xq9ZZXuG/s1600/Picture+7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdzDRiOKHAL48y1h6R30MysYhlhsgQbG-2-EUEZyrrlYBvNqsQTSpwv963vzsHYWctd3XPfAOHHBwHx1aj-ipFqxusFA0xMvjwTwXcGT74i_f2c5E8cAZGnd1L_pW4AR8zL76_Xq9ZZXuG/s400/Picture+7.png" width="400" /></a></div>The cheese in the red and yellow bowls is mozzarella and the cheese in the orange and blue bowls is swiss. Any of the cheese will brown up nicely - just in different amounts of time. I could have left the swiss ones in a bit longer, but I'm impatient!<br />
<br />
One last tip: don't skip the sherry. Even though it's a very small amount, it adds a complexity to the soup that you really do miss without it.Tonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17448568961007657828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4577067037814413989.post-64449034584807352662011-12-11T09:19:00.000-06:002011-12-11T09:19:25.672-06:00Mind blowing cake decorating tip.I cannot believe I forgot to include the amazing tip I used in frosting my ninja bread men in the last post. Do you know how to use a piping bag and not make a mess? The tip is from <a href="http://www.karenscookies.net/">Karens Cookies</a> but I found the video at <a href="http://dollarstorecrafts.com/2011/09/mind-blowing-cake-decorating-tip/">Dollar Store Crafts</a>. It made me dig my piping bag out of the back of the drawer. I never use it because it's a hassle to clean. Go watch the 2 minute video. You will think, "Why did I never thing of that? It's brilliant!"<br />
<br />
Place your frosting or whatever you are going to pipe in a pile in the center of a piece of saran wrap. Roll it up like a Tootsie Roll. Put the whole thing in your piping bag with one end sticking out the bottom. Snip that off, pipe away, no messy bag or hands to clean up afterward. That didn't help did it? <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=QxE-pnqmsE0">Go watch the video.</a> It makes it clear and easy to understand.Tonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17448568961007657828noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4577067037814413989.post-63088787676439800252011-12-09T10:11:00.001-06:002011-12-09T10:13:38.332-06:00My ninja bread men will kick your gingerbread men's butts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvIU2lguxwITHrJHtxkhAgNuP5sfQzSWeqNn2Ns0hgHYVCF02MbFKSSfo3iqWYJQYC0HyuZ_pRSizttNtCuz9PgK6-M0kGIcxOW4k5YbOR2O6ElrsShV6KKsP7UpUCM8FqNtTrWNoSHS86/s1600/Picture+5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="333" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvIU2lguxwITHrJHtxkhAgNuP5sfQzSWeqNn2Ns0hgHYVCF02MbFKSSfo3iqWYJQYC0HyuZ_pRSizttNtCuz9PgK6-M0kGIcxOW4k5YbOR2O6ElrsShV6KKsP7UpUCM8FqNtTrWNoSHS86/s400/Picture+5.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>As I noted here this summer, I am a <a href="http://pinterest.com/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> addict. I am up to almost 1,000 pins. Ridiculous, I know, but I LOVE it and it is so inspiring. Anyway, last Christmas friends gave us ninja bread men cookie cutters. They are hilarious. We don't really like gingerbread cookies or sugar cookies but I knew I needed to make ninja bread men. Then I remembered making gingerbread ornaments when I was a kid that smelled wonderful but lasted from year to year, but I needed a recipe. Pinterest to the rescue!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfOQtVL5n-sZFdWWIAXnK46z2CzyVuLNwHKPlyiu1sN5tp2M3cJ44QAfRI9uLKvYF6pGTal2lQsjAcqelnx3pfOBxl0bcvhu6eNv6t56QKKvnF0EqDOm-XC03fL8KOTfYt1LR1M2Pegqob/s1600/dough.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfOQtVL5n-sZFdWWIAXnK46z2CzyVuLNwHKPlyiu1sN5tp2M3cJ44QAfRI9uLKvYF6pGTal2lQsjAcqelnx3pfOBxl0bcvhu6eNv6t56QKKvnF0EqDOm-XC03fL8KOTfYt1LR1M2Pegqob/s320/dough.jpg" width="256" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The "dough" recipe is from <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/how-to/cinnamon-bird-ornaments#slide_3" target="_blank">Martha Stewart</a> via Pinterest. It's just 1 c. cinnamon, 1/4 c. applesauce and 1/2 c. white glue. Poke holes with the end of a straw so you can string a ribbon through. Then either let it dry for 24 hours or put it in the oven at 200 degrees for around 2 hours or until it's dried out. I did have to use a bit more glue and applesauce than her recipe called for. </div><br />

The "frosting" is homemade puff paint, recipe courtesy <a href="http://www.delawarecountymoms.com/2011/07/getting-crafty-with-nicole-homemade.html" target="_blank">Delaware County Moms</a> via Pinterest. It's just equal parts flour, salt and water. You can add food coloring or paint if you want it to be colored.<br />

I know you are jealous of my ninja bread men cookie cutters, but you can make ornaments with any cookie cutters or just shape the dough with your hands. We used the last little bit to make ninja stars to go on the tree too! Hilarious!<br />

I am obsessed with tall boots with long socks or leg warmers. Yes, leg warmers. No, I'm not confused about what decade it is. I'm not talking about 80s leg warmers over spandex in neon colors. These leg warmers are worn under boots so no one will ever know that they aren't really socks. I've seen them all over at stores and online. Some for as high as $80!!<br />
<br />
I'm on a budget and even if I wasn't, I could never spend $80 on a pair of socks. So I decided to make my own. $12 at Salvation Army got me 6 fairly ugly sweaters in random sizes - and now I have 6 new pairs of leg warmers to wear as boot socks!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTaD392ZFZEk3Se0EUgjitGj1fgTlZ8OW2eAtmXRA4agFvQNrHVDn-stB6VT_oo0x0RYd_Px4l93qaQL7QopL6gNvb7l2S8EwuD_R-ta1z-S-JXzhgEETgLKKt_SzCtsUZlkD-cwCWppOp/s1600/legwarmers.8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTaD392ZFZEk3Se0EUgjitGj1fgTlZ8OW2eAtmXRA4agFvQNrHVDn-stB6VT_oo0x0RYd_Px4l93qaQL7QopL6gNvb7l2S8EwuD_R-ta1z-S-JXzhgEETgLKKt_SzCtsUZlkD-cwCWppOp/s400/legwarmers.8.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br />
Like them? Do you want to make some too? Here's how:<br />
<br />
<i>( I used a serger, but I think you could zigzag stitch all the places I serged and still end up with the same effect.)</i><br />
<br />
Step 1: Acquire some ugly sweaters at a thrift store. Make sure the knit has some stretch to it because, in all likelihood, your legs are bigger around than the sleeves of most tops.<br />
<br />
Step 2: Measure from your heel to the back of your knee and add 1 inch. Measure that length from the cuff of your sweater.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3zRXf-4uiEmEtScNqundg-3gg-oxv3Ohr1lYO6ySBGoqK4EJu6ynZklJciki_G-UggWMCIj-JljJCimGHPGu2vl5Wvp6r2Vqjdvk5mT_TdNm3mX0_zShaDkoCz75sDMftx1BY-XKxAFdd/s1600/legwarmers.1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3zRXf-4uiEmEtScNqundg-3gg-oxv3Ohr1lYO6ySBGoqK4EJu6ynZklJciki_G-UggWMCIj-JljJCimGHPGu2vl5Wvp6r2Vqjdvk5mT_TdNm3mX0_zShaDkoCz75sDMftx1BY-XKxAFdd/s400/legwarmers.1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Step 3: Cut both sleeves off. Stay perpendicular to the sleeve - don't follow the shoulder seam.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzClTGRxpnWQDJFOL1yDaMZAToTv-0-KR1Qhnh-Lo4giyR_LEo_6RIXXjDr56SqUGzAr8PelEQrrowUASjnFfxWMQKBVM8csH0Dn6o6W7zB5rf_0XkhiAvUEuMA2AvHL2NeIAUuhrDPU2w/s1600/legwarmers.2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzClTGRxpnWQDJFOL1yDaMZAToTv-0-KR1Qhnh-Lo4giyR_LEo_6RIXXjDr56SqUGzAr8PelEQrrowUASjnFfxWMQKBVM8csH0Dn6o6W7zB5rf_0XkhiAvUEuMA2AvHL2NeIAUuhrDPU2w/s400/legwarmers.2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<i>*At this point, slip the sleeve on your leg. If it is loose at the top (3 of my 6 pairs were), turn them inside out and serge up the underarm seam to make them smaller. </i><br />

Step 4: Cut a small (1/2 inch) slit at the underarm seam and serge all the way around the raw edge. <br />

Learn from my mistakes: Decide from the beginning which will get trim and buttons - then put the trim on BEFORE the buttons. I sewed the buttons on first and they were constantly in the way when I was trying to put the trim on. Also, don't forget to zigzag trim on and stretch the knit a bit as you sew. You need to be able to get them over the widest part of your calf, even if the trim doesn't have any stretch.<br />
<br />
I left the argyle ones unadorned, but they are super long so I can put them up high above my knees or slouch them down a bit for knee high length.<br />

I have purchased several sets of mesh bags that work wonderful for fruits and veggies at the grocery store or at the farmers market. Somehow they always seem to wander off. I'm not sure if I'm accidentally throwing them out occasionally, if they're blowing away when I'm not looking or if some of the friends, family and strangers who are always so impressed with them "borrow" a few here and there. At one point in time, I had 20 in 4 different sizes. The last time I took count, I was down to six!<br />
<br />
Simple solution? How about $3 for 12 in two sizes! 1 yard of mesh on sale for $1 plus one spool of ribbon for $2. Less than two hours later, I had 8 small bags and 4 large ones!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA3Vi6F7_tubdsjs-VPYfTcc0-Lw1PN2TrUCV34Ka0S_nsqe1hFICd5Es1kgfTfqxUWWINg_SdkunmNd3z2cWAoiZYMsbfJ5KiydhosSUZkeNSTOnCluOPacgS_fvDUhAxjx8gs_pGiJ8U/s1600/produce+bags.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA3Vi6F7_tubdsjs-VPYfTcc0-Lw1PN2TrUCV34Ka0S_nsqe1hFICd5Es1kgfTfqxUWWINg_SdkunmNd3z2cWAoiZYMsbfJ5KiydhosSUZkeNSTOnCluOPacgS_fvDUhAxjx8gs_pGiJ8U/s400/produce+bags.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I just serged around 3 sides and around the opening at the top. Flipped the top down about 1/2 an inch and zigzagged that all the way around. Snip two little slits on one side and use a safety pin to slide the ribbon through. Tie a knot and viola! They're cute, they're cheap and they are environmentally friendly. Never a reason to use plastic bags for produce again!Tonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17448568961007657828noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4577067037814413989.post-89749334125216318872011-11-13T21:40:00.000-06:002011-11-13T21:40:18.449-06:00Wee li'l pumpkinsLast month I visited a friend in Brooklyn. She had the cutest tiny velvet pumpkins that she had bought in Kansas City. I very badly wanted to pack them up in my suitcase and bring them home. However, she appeared to be rather attached to them too, and she'd been nice enough to let me stay the weekend at her apartment, so I thought better than to repay her kindness by stealing her things! Instead I came home and made my own. <br />
<br />

My camera was really struggling with these. I think it was actually the bowl they are in. Clockwise from left they are navy, red, purple, green, burgundy, magenta and orange (center). I bought gourds and small pumpkins, snapped off their stems and let them dry before glueing them on.<br />
<br />

I started out with five. Then decided I wanted more colors, so I went back to the fabric store (and grocery store for pumpkins) and made two more - one of each color for a total of seven. That wasn't enough, so I made a second of each color. What the heck am I going to do with 14 tiny velvet pumpkins? No idea. Don't care. I love them.<br />

I used Tulip brand face paint, which was wonderful! Great coverage, went on easy, stayed dry (with baby powder), and washed off clean at the end of the night. I used Tulip brand rhinestones and skin glue - which also stayed on perfectly. (No, I am not being paid to endorse Tulip, I was just that impressed!)<br />

I am so happy to have found so many other Ghastlies loving women in the blogosphere. I had a blast last week checking out everyone's ghastlie creations and entering to win prizes. YAY! Now it's finally my turn to share!<br />
<br />
My very first Ghastlies project means so much to me for several reasons. When I found this fabric line, I was not a quilter - and had no desire to become one. I loved the fabric so much, I bought it anyway. At the time, the only use I could think of was a quilt. (I know now that is NOT the case at all!) But I am actually glad that I didn't think to make other things with it - because now I am a quilter and I love it and it's all because of the Ghastlies!<br />
<br />
So this is my very first quilt - made start to finish completely by me with no idea what I was doing the entire way through! Now, why do I love quilting? Many, many reason, but the number one reason is it makes me feel close to my grandma. She passed away nearly a decade ago - much, much too young - but she was a beautiful person and wonderful quilter.<br />
<br />
I owe a big "Thank You!" to the Ghastlies for making me a very happy quilter.<br />
<br />
On to the projects:<br />

I know the bride and groom hand pick each item, but I like to put a little more thought and effort into a gift I'm giving. I prefer to make something custom for gifts as well.<br />
<br />
I am a paper nerd. I love paper. I love how it feels in my hands, the saturated colors, the texture and pretty much everything about it. I love cutting and folding and working with paper in all manners. So, unsurprisingly, one of my favorite things about weddings is seeing the invitations. I've made custom gifts from invites before. One fun idea is to scan the invite, print it on a self-adhesive label and adhere it to a bottle of wine. Throw in two wine glasses and a corkscrew from the registry and a note for the couple to enjoy the wine on their first anniversary. But what if the couple aren't wine drinkers? Make the invite into pretty Christmas ornaments! It's super simple.<br />

Try to get each line of text onto a strip. You'll be able to read some of them later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj48zadhuLqbYMqkwQ5q2LEVmrNWK8vQDrbtE2O6YHHk8BAeeXEB2zcUA_bI5UBTJHOpjIjxfDfwY_-Y9w2yzpZLsemNYaQdIdUNEKeEfy2HyJgJaaB5KsNzwteNKBNleVtLQP6TNIZnBdN/s1600/+curls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj48zadhuLqbYMqkwQ5q2LEVmrNWK8vQDrbtE2O6YHHk8BAeeXEB2zcUA_bI5UBTJHOpjIjxfDfwY_-Y9w2yzpZLsemNYaQdIdUNEKeEfy2HyJgJaaB5KsNzwteNKBNleVtLQP6TNIZnBdN/s400/+curls.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Curl the strips around a narrow pencil, taking care not to rub off the ink with your fingers. The heavier weight cardstock will hold the shape nicely.<br />
<br />
Buy clear glass Christmas ornaments at a craft store and fill with the curled invite!<br />
<br />

You can buy the bulbs individually or as a set. For this particular wedding, each piece of paper (and the envelope) were all different colors.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgHFNtUzJchdCauYHcN9egbejkPOFRYEyFtD8yE0ia5tPfzfJwzeW1tImILP6ZiWq3BOcg6nzDhNjWga1khgDmmplvCTMwfFQdCSKgwp4cZjBIdCsUuha8uCfkdkpvReiZCzseP2a_W9mK/s1600/+accomodations.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgHFNtUzJchdCauYHcN9egbejkPOFRYEyFtD8yE0ia5tPfzfJwzeW1tImILP6ZiWq3BOcg6nzDhNjWga1khgDmmplvCTMwfFQdCSKgwp4cZjBIdCsUuha8uCfkdkpvReiZCzseP2a_W9mK/s400/+accomodations.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>So I made one out of the accommodations card.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQU49nUTi2EkAIjp1W_GEaug-n8615jDXL1ba3Qq51r9lFAYyUMrz9p3VvH0x1iFWyMciQKusStV8pDpOl2ATqY-1Jd-DyntOZ-83yQlbtN_6iVq_Gkeo7J5It9rLd7fzLIDE4EVrxNq3t/s1600/+envelope.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQU49nUTi2EkAIjp1W_GEaug-n8615jDXL1ba3Qq51r9lFAYyUMrz9p3VvH0x1iFWyMciQKusStV8pDpOl2ATqY-1Jd-DyntOZ-83yQlbtN_6iVq_Gkeo7J5It9rLd7fzLIDE4EVrxNq3t/s400/+envelope.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>And one out of the envelope! I sent back the RSVP card, so I cheated and bought the right color of paper at a scrapbooking store to make a 4th ornament to complete the set. You can add fun things like glitter and charms too. I put gold, silver and bronze glitter into the balls.<br />
<br />
It's quick, simple and very affordable. Throw in a couple of other Christmas related items or another handmade item and you'll have a memorable, custom wedding gift!Tonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17448568961007657828noreply@blogger.com6
